What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is only a sample text from the printing and typesetting field. Lorem Ipsum has been the standard proof text in this industry since the 16th century, when an unknown printer took a setting hook with letters and scrambled them to make a font catalog. It has not only survived five centuries but has also been adopted, virtually unchanged, in electronic typesetting. It became popular in the 1960s with the introduction of Letraset sheets with Lorem Ipsum passages and more recently by desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker that included versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It has long been a well-known fact that while viewing the layout of a page, a reader is distracted by the textual content. The important point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it consists of a more or less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to “Here your text, here your text” which makes it more or less readable Dutch. Many desktop publishing packages and Web page editors today use Lorem Ipsum as their standard model text, and a search for “lorem ipsum” unlocks many Web sites that are still under construction. Several versions have developed over the years, sometimes accidentally sometimes on purpose (inserted humor and the like).

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not just random text. it has its roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 B.C., making it more than 2,000 years old. Richard McClintock, a professor of Latin at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and while searching for the word in classical literature discovered its unsuspected source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The extremes of good and evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BCE.
